                                        Coupon Wave

Rimm Associates website is the "Best of the Best" coupons, coupon codes, freebies, sales, jobs, education and so much more. There are over 25 separate pages, each a different category. My goal is to bring everything a person is looking for in one place. Time saving, best quality, and savings!

First, Let's see if I can show you how to save money! When buying those favorite items, people will research for the best products, at the lowest cost. Why not do the same with groceries. Most people will make a list of what groceries that are needed, go to the store, not even checking what's on sale. WHY?

                                                Couponing is money-
Do you know that coupons are worth $.25--$5.00 and more add up. Coupons can be higher depending on the service.  Would you throw away a $.25 or a $5.00 bill?  So why throw away a piece of paper worth this much?

I have been told several times that using coupons is a waste of time. To some of you maybe this is true. I will do my best to show you this is not the case. Do you know I’ve seen coupons sit on desks, tables, and counters, to be shuffled through a couple of times put back, never to be touched again till there in the trash?  I have never seen coupons grow legs, read ads, drive to the store, pick up the products and collect the savings!   It does take a little work and I will do my best to show you how!

                                         Couponing---It's Really Your Business:

COUPONING: A good strategy to save money on food, clothing and most items. Everyone eats, buys clothes, does activities. So why not save money doing so? It is not a get rich scheme, you really need to work at it, but in the end, you will find it worth it.

COUPON: A small piece of the printed paper that lets you get a service or product for free or at a lower cost. New coupons come out about every 4-6 weeks. There are stores that accept coupons but don’t double or triple and limit their offers to store-brand items. Some coupons may have store names on them and you can use these at other stores if the store permits.

Coupons have fine print also letting you know the rules and regulations. It is important for couponers to understand the guidelines, and staying within the legal boundaries when using coupons. Failure to do so could result in coupon fraud, which could lead to a criminal charge. You can find coupon rules and scam coupons at:
Coupon Information Corporation: http://www.couponinformationcenter.com/

Where do you start?  Truly, I’ve done the work for you!

1. You do need to set goals!
2. What will you need to reach your goal?
3. How much do you need to save each week?
4. How many hours do you have to spare?
5. Get family, friends, neighbors, work buddies on board. Lots of kids love this!
6. I guarantee coupons grow fast!

                                                         Make A Grocery List
When going to the grocery store if you're hungry, you find yourself checking out with way more than you than really wanted.  This is "Hunger Shopping" and can really hurt your wallet!
Make a list of groceries that you need for the upcoming week. or month.  You will only buy what you're wanting and can afford. The amount that you saved can go for other things.
                                                                      LET’S GO!
Pick one or two stores, learn as much as you can about the store(s).
1.Get a copy of the store layout from customer service or make your own aisle-by-aisle of the store. This is a huge time-saver when you are organizing your coupons and making your shopping list.
2.Find the store’s weekly ad paper online or in-store.
3.Join the store’s savings card program, if available.
4. Find out about the store’s coupon policy (get a copy), rain-check policy, and senior or military discount program. For every store you shop, you need to get the store policy, not every cashier is updated.
KNOW the store’s policies so you don’t have an issue when you’re in the checkout line. No one wants to get to the register and have everything fall apart when your planning on saving money!
Grocery stores, retailers, and markets do not always have the same policies, all stores are not nationally owned.
Stores will have different rules for rain checks, coupons, and product amounts. You may get cashback if you exceed the value of your purchase at some stores, others may not! You can use one store coupon and one manufacturer’s coupon per item. If you try to use more, chances are you are violating store policy or the terms of one of the coupons you are already using.
5.Find out how long a store cycle lasts--usually every 6 weeks. You want to purchase the sale cost, not the full price.
6. There are tons of APPS now that help with coupons, save you money and some give you back money!

ORGANIZATION: The most important thing that thrifty shoppers need to know about couponing, be very organized. Make sure your coupons are organized before you enter the store. Looking for coupons when you are in line can be stressful. The smoother the transactions go, the easier your shopping trips become.
                                                 Types of Couponing Systems
Most effective methods for organizing your coupons are below--you can choose whats best for you.

The Three-Ring Binder       You will need to separate in catagories
1.Here are some categories--I also added some sub categories if you need to branch off the main category.
                                                        Baby/food/diapers.ect,
                                                        Baking/cakes/cookies/pie's
                                                        Batteries
                                                        Beauty/shampoo/personal
                                                        Breakfast
                                                        Cereal/dry/hot/pop tarts. ect.
                                                        Canned/veg,/tomatoes/fruit, ect.
                                                        Coffee
                                                        Condements/ketsup/mustard/a-1/, ect.
                                                        Cleaning/toilet/air freshers/cleaners

                                                        Diet
                                                        Drinks/water/juice/soda
                                                        Frozen, veg./f-fries/ice cream
                                                        Laundry/soap /bleach. ect.
                                                        Meats
                                                        Medical/eye,pain, first aid, ect.
                                                        Pantry
                                                        Pasta noodles, macaroni, ect.
                                                        Snacks/candy/cookies/chips,ect,

2. Sport card sleeves work great to hold coupons. There are many pockets on each sheet, you can see the coupon and expiration date easily. You can ad tabs on the sheets for your categories.

3.You can find the sleeves at walmart, office supply stores, or at my amazon store-on this page.

4. Next you need a 3 ring notebook--it does not need to be fancy--that's your choice. You will need a pencil holder for it. This will hold your scissors, pen, pencils, note pad, calculator. You can also find these items at walmart, office supply stores, or my amazon store on this page.

The Filing Box
1. You will need recipe box, index cards for notes, alphabet tabs, or tabs you can make your categories with. (Sample list above)
You can purchase items at walmart, office supply stores, or my amazon store on this page.

2.You will want to clip both online and offline coupons--you will have to use a paper clip to keep multiplies. I found using envelopes also to be helpful. You can write on the front if you have several envelopes.

Expansion File
1. You will need an expansion file, tabs for categories. (Sample list above) You can purchase items at walmart, office supply stores, or my amazon store on this page.

2..You will want to clip both online and offline coupons--you will have to use a paper clips to keep multiplies. I found using envelopes also can be helpful. You can write on the front if you have several envelopes.

Purse Coupon File
1. This is a very small coupon holder but great for shopping. It can hold what your planning on purchasing, plus any coupons you pick up at the store for your next visit.

You will need to keep files for rebates, copies of receipts for rebates, and grocery receipts. At the bottom of the receipts you will find specials you can use at a later date,
Have a folder to keep all your ads, so you have easy access.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Collecting Coupons: You need to first set aside a few hours a week to find new coupons. Sunday newspapers usually has 2-5 inserts in it. You can purchase these at your local store, or order them on line for a lot less, (address below)

Most important is the EXPIRATION date, the manufacturer's want you to use the coupon as soon as possible — Be a Confident Shopper by Understanding your Coupons.

READ THE FINE PRINT: Secondly is know what your reading.Know what your reading. Make sure you understand what product sizes are.
( EXAMPLE: Get 1.00 off when you purchase two 16 oz. Pepsi ) Or (.75 off when you purchase one item of 20 oz. or larger). If the coupon is for a 20-ounce bottle of Pepsi, don’t plan to use it with a 12-ounce can of Pepsi.)
There is a list of Manufacturer's you can e-mail to get free coupons on the left side of this page!

                                                   Kraft Food & Family
                                                        Women's Day
                                                             All You

Couponing Group:  Once a month gets your friends, family and coupon clubbers together to do an  couponing exchange!  Lots of fun and can be very productive!  Coupon trading is a great way to get more coupons that you use a lot  of or get hold of coupons that you can’t find yourself.

Grouping coupons: You will need to find a way to keep tabs on expiration dates and maximize your coupon grouping. Don’t rush to use the coupons immediately. In order to use coupons effectively, you will often have to use them at a later date to combine with store sales. Be aware of the expiration dates, you don’t want good coupons to go to waste.

Start a system: List all multiple coupons you have. Put together with paper clips. Do not staple coupons. Make a plan to combine store coupons with manufacturer ones to increase savings. Take advantage of stores that double coupons for even bigger savings. Most stores have stopped the doubling of coupons, so really watch your coupons. Compare your coupons with the sales ads. Write your shopping list and ensure that you have the right coupons for the items included.

Stacking coupons: Combining coupons is known as ‘stacking’ and is one of the main goals used by couponers to save big bucks. Store sales coupon, plus manufacturing coupon. Your favorite store is having a sale, 10 for 10, your coupon reads $.50 off. If the coupon doubles, you get the item free.
Or you have a store coupon for $.25, a manufactures coupon for $.25, put them together makes $.50 off. Making that item $.50 a piece.

BULK BUYING:  at bottom prices: It is essential to know when prices hit rock bottom. A general rule, the 6/ 8-week cycle. Take notes of which products go on sale, that way you know that it is the lowest price for that item. Keep a record of prices during sales so you can determine the best time to stock up. When buying a large number of items, contact your store manager, so he or she can order more of the items you need. This leaves items on the shelves, making everyone happy. If you have coupons for the items ordered, let the manager know, so the cashier is aware and the items can be brought out when picking up.. Makes your shopping smoother.

You can find a lot of coupons on the internet, so most of your time is spent looking through coupon websites. Save those sites in some kind of a file, it makes the next search so much faster! My advice is to first gather as many coupons you can from various sources, then sort through them one by one. There are also, websites that upload electronic coupons directly to your store rewards cards.

COUPON.COM: http://bcg.coupons.com/link/index/1192440001/153741
When you PRINT coupons, you can only print 2 of each item, from each coupon site!
Do not photo the coupons-the store will not accept and you may open yourself up to legal issue's!

Loyalty program: Signing up for store loyalty programs, another saving. Some stores won’t allow non-members to shop at sale prices. You won’t be able to use online special coupons unless you become a member.

E-Coupons or electronic coupons is a very convenient way to save money at the grocery store. Free coupons load directly to your participating grocery store savings card, so there is no paper to lose or forget.
When you purchase the sale items, scan your store card, the ecoupon amount automatically comes off your total at checkout . Not all stores offer the ecoupons.
You will need to have a store loyalty card to load the ecoupons onto.
Also, you need a different loyalty card for each store that you shop at.
Log onto one of the store/ companies that distribute ecoupons and register with them.
Once you sign up, you’ll have to enter a name and email address. You will also need to select your store name, and then enter the number from your store card. This step is very important, the ecoupons will load to this card. Now brows the coupons, select the ones you want and they are automatically added to your card.
Just swipe the card and the coupons automatically comes off of your total.

Can I use  or download ecoupons during shopping?  Yes
If your phone is web-enabled cell phone you can install an App that will allow access to your account and load ecoupons during your shopping trip.

What rules apply to ecoupons?
ECoupons can only be used one time on one product. Once the coupon is used it removes off your list,
ECoupons do not double. Check with your store about their ecoupon doubling policy.
ECoupons can be stacked with manufacturer coupons and to increase your savings
ECoupons can be stacked on themselves. Often (varying by stores), Cellfire.com and Shortcuts.com ECoupons will come off for the same item. Stack a manufacturer coupon and/or Store coupon on top –  So even though they are single use, you can often use them to get items for free.
It is very common to have both electronic coupon and a paper coupon for the same item. If both are manufacturer coupons, you probably won’t be able to use both coupons on the same item.  When the product is scanned, the eCoupon comes off immediately, it eliminates your option of using the paper coupon, even if it is worth more.

How do I know if the ecoupon worked?
You’ll see the ecoupon’s amount under the item on your receipt, or  they will appear at the receipt bottom. If  not on the receipt, the ecoupons didn’t go through.
Call the ecoupon company and find out why. If you purchased the right products, they will reimburse you.

Many couponers: love getting a large number of items for nothing (or next to nothing), only do this if you can actually use that amount. Don’t leave the shelves bare, be considerate of your fellow shoppers and take only what you know you and your family will actually use.

Tear Pads: Vendors put tear pads and coupons out by their products. This is a favor to the consumer. Take a couple of these, but please do not take the whole pad or an excessive amount that is just RUDE! These are not put out for people to sell, this is a promotional tool to see what response the product is getting.

Peelies: Coupons found on products. These coupons are put on certain products in order to sell them faster. Do not remove them and save them for later. Buy the product and use the coupon at checkout. These are not also not to be removed for sale.

Blinkies: Found in the aisle at the store spitting out of a black box. The box usually has a red blinking light on it. Take a few of these — saving them for a sale if you are going to buy the product. Otherwise, leave them for the next shopper. These also are not to be sold.

Take One Box -SmartSource--  small boxes  located at eye level on store shelves, near the product which is being promoted. It dispenses coupons, recipes, rebates and other promotional material.

SmartSource Showcase Extra Food Coupons--located on the shelf near the promoted products and contains colorful cards that pop out to attract the shopper’s eye. They are also used to dispense coupons or rebates.

Freezer Extra Food Coupons-- coupons for products in the freezer section where the dispenser is attached.

Bottle Nec Food Coupons -- 5Hangtag Coupons coupons or rebate forms that are attached to the neck of bottles and jars. Often these coupons are for related food products and do not specify that a purchase of the bottled item is required.

On-Receipt Grocery Coupons-- printed coupons for future purchases at the store along with the receipt. These coupons are good only for the retailer’s chain of stores.

Grocery Coupons on Back of Receipt --coupons are pre-printed on the back of the register receipts paper. Usually they are for local stores such as dry cleaners or health clubs.

CVS Coupon Loyalty Card Scanners -- (e.g. CVS) have introduced coupon machines that will send out coupons when scanning your loyalty card,  always store coupons, and many of them are for the store’s brands.

Purchase coupons  --  coupons purchased from a clipping service for a small fee E-Bay, ect.

Stores ads: Can be combined with manufacturers coupons, for even more savings. Please do not take a stack of ads from a store in order to hold for yourself. You are not the only person trying to save money.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PEAK HOURS: Avoid shopping at 5 pm, fellow shoppers are trying to buy groceries for dinner. Cashiers, fellow shoppers that are waiting in line will get stressed out, which ends up being a bad day. Shop when the store tends to be less crowded, such as later at night or early in the morning. Crowds,  Don’t wait until the last day of the sale to shop, your store is likely to be out of the items you need!
Find out your store's ordering schedule. Then shop on the days you know they will be stocked. Most stores receive shipments 3 times a week on the same days. Keep in mind the time of day the shipments come in. Ask if they have items in the back. Many times the store has not had time to re-stock. Call right before you leave home, to see if your top 3 items are in stock. That will help you decide if it is worth a trip to the store. Try your three closest stores and choose the one that is stocked the best.

The shopper behind you has one item and no coupons, you have several items and coupons, let them go ahead of you. This is common courtesy and will give Couponers a better name.

TRANSACTIONS: The starting of a check out (including coupons), ending with a total on your grocery slip. You may have multiple transactions in one trip! Check your store policy to see how many you are allowed in one trip

If the store is out of any item you planned to buy, ask customer service for a rain check.

You discover while at the store that you can’t use a coupon and it is still valid, leave it for someone else who may be able to make use of it.

                                 STOCK - PILING
Stockpiling: takes organization and space. Yes, it's nice when you're short of something, money's tight, you know that your groceries are there. Be safe thou!

What To Stockpile: Stockpile only the things your family will use, its not a savings if it just sits on a shelf!

Key steps to take: Make a list of items you will use in a month. Check grocery sales papers to see what items are on sale. Check the sale prices with coupons for purchasing record your savings.

What Not To Do: Remember, the point is to save money and build up a reserve of useful items. Store items that will quickly spoil. Check of expiration dates. Once a month is good! Buy things most members of your family won’t eat. Buy more than you have room to store.

Stockpile storage: You will need space to store the items you're going to stockpile. Somewhere cool and dark. Heat and light can add to food deterioration. Basements provide protection, have enough room to set up metal shelving units. Other's use a portion of their garage, for paper products and toiletries, not the best for food storage if you live in a warm area. Make sure its sturdy, safe, and easy access for you. Groceries get heavy fast!

How To Organize Your Stockpile: How you store the food is as important as your collection of a stockpile. A monthly rotation of foods is a must in stockpiling. This keeps expiration dates in updated. Put dry goods such as cereals, snacks, etc. in sealable plastic containers eliminating bugs! If your concerned that water damage might occur or if you live in a flood area, make sure everything is on the higher shelf's. Below please find an estimated timeline for products in storage!

ALWAYS be kind to the cashier. There is always a manager if the checkout person has an attitude about your coupons, smile graciously and Thank them for their help. They may have had an unfriendly couponer or someone who tried to trick them into honoring coupons that weren’t valid. Have your method of payment ready. This is especially important if a line has formed behind you while the cashier was scanning your coupons. Your fellow shoppers and the cashier will appreciate anything you can do to make the process smoother. If you have a disagreement with the cashier, go to customer service about how you are using your coupons, politely ask them if a manager is available. If the dispute cannot be solved and you believe you are still in the right, follow up with a polite letter or phone call to the company that owns the store. You’d be surprised how often you will receive a response if you keep things civil. If you follow these simple guidelines, you and your fellow shoppers will have a more pleasant experience.

You will help make sure, that couponers everywhere, get to continue to do what we love – find great deals.

Don’t Throw Away Coupons! : When clipping ---take a few minutes to clip all of them. You may have friends, family or groups that you can give these to.Senior Citizens Centers, Salvation Army, Community Centers, Churches, Trading groups, Coupon Clubs, Couponing parties. You could even start your own couponing blog! Most of all the military! Military bases can accept and use coupons 6 months past their expiration dates. For a list of Military bases, you can find them on my other page!

Courage lives on!

contact-companies-for-coupons

One of my favorite ways to get high-value and sometimes even FREE item coupons is e-mailing manufacturers. It is very simple and doesn’t take a whole lot of your time. The below list of companies have been known to send out coupons to consumers who contact them. All you need to do is go to the links included below and send the manufacturer a little note.

Not sure what to say when you contact them?

Most of the time I just let them know that I like their product, sometimes I’ll give them a suggestion on how they could potentially improve their product, and other times I’ll ask if they are willing to send me a coupon so I can try/continue to use their product. If I have not tried their product before, I’ll let them know that I would like to. It doesn’t have to be anything long or fancy. Just keep it simple and do not forget to include your mailing information if you have an opportunity to do so. I challenge all of you to get as far through this list as possible…even if it takes you a month or two or three. I promise, it will pay off! In a week or two, you’ll be running to the mailbox instead of walking! Make sure to come back here and leave a comment when you start getting your coupons!

Important Note

Please make sure to keep in mind that sometimes manufacturers will give out a certain amount of coupons for a specific time period. If you hear back from them and they say that they are not giving out coupons at this time, it is still worth checking again in a few months. 😉 I VERY highly encourage you to also e-mail brands that are not on this list. Take a look through your cabinets to get some ideas of the brands your family purchases often. Want to see more money saving tips, freebies, coupons and online shopping deals? Bonus! Here are some great tips from reader Tiffany on what you should say when you contact the brands:

I used to do consumer relations for a big consumer goods company. Don’t write specifically asking for coupons. Write and tell them that you love their product, and give a personal story about why. Say how you tell all your friends about their product, and how much better it is than xxx (insert rival brand’s product). It’s not going to be a computer on the other end reading it, it’s a person, and if you write something bland and short you’re going to get a similar response. I don’t know how other companies are, but we had free reign to send what we wanted. If I thought the message was genuine, I’d send more. I did postal mail along with email, and the letters from kids were the best. I always tried to send extras for them.

Know your product though! Don’t write Tide and tell them how much you like them better than Gain, and then write Gain and tell them how much better they are than Tide. The same company makes both, and chances are the same person will be reading both emails.

I have written and emailed some of these companies and some others that I thought of. Here are the ones that I have gotten positive responses from. I have emailed them all and if the responded saying they would not be sending coupons, I also sent them a letter by mail. If I emailed and they did not respond, I also sent them a letter by mail. If I contacted them 2 ways, I wrote in one of them asking for coupons and in the other one, I just complimented their product. I got a mix response…some that I asked for coupons sent them and some that I didn’t ask for coupons sent them. Just give a very detailed personal touch to your message. They will reply, usually in a personal way.

Learn how to coupon the smart way with this Smart Coupon Strategy. Stack discounts one on top of the other, and get your groceries for next to nothing.
Using 50-cent coupons will only get you so far, but if you’re aiming for big savings you will have to adopt a smarter and more effective coupon strategy.

Smart Coupon Strategy is about maximizing the coupons to save money. The trick is to get double and triple discounts on the same item, by matching the items already on sale with the coupons. This is known as discount stacking. It is the core of couponing and the only way to get groceries for free.

Here’s an example: Say you have a $1.00 manufacturer coupon for a shampoo bottle that’s normally priced at $3.50. So now that bottle costs you $2.50. Nice, but not enough…

If however you hang on to the coupon and wait patiently until that bottle goes on sale for $2.00 and only then use the coupon – you get that same shampoo bottle for only $1.00. Nice, but you can do even better…

If you shop at a store that double coupons or allow you to stack coupons – this time you pay nothing for that shampoo!

That’s all there is to it – Play your cards right and get groceries for free!

O.K., so how to coupon smart?
What most people don’t know is that when the large companies start pushing certain product, it is usually done in two waves.

Initially – they’ll put out coupons to start bumping up sales. Later on in the promotion campaign, any time between 3-4 weeks later, they’ll move onto sale prices.

There are two reasons for this.

They’d rather have a steady and long boost in sells rather than a spike.
People who bought the product with coupons and liked it would probably buy it again on their next month’s shopping trip if it’s on sale.
Your Smart Coupon Strategy should be to hang on to the coupons and be patient. Don’t use them immediately. Instead – Keep them until the products come on sale. Only use them on top of the already reduced sale price.

What I do is this:

I take out the coupon inserts from the Sunday paper and keep them.
During the weekend, while having my coffee I leaf thru them and clip out grocery coupons or food coupons for all of the products I usually buy, regardless whether they’re on my shopping list for this week or not.
I do the same with my favorite store’s magazine.
I organize the coupons in my coupon organizer according to product type. In it I keep all of my various coupon types – my Sunday paper coupons, my grocery store coupons, coupons I’ve downloaded and printed online and coupons I’ve collected (blinkies, tearpads etc.) during my previous shopping trips
Now comes the planning part. I go over my shopping list, my pantry and my coupons, and try to figure out whether I have enough coupons, or do I need to go online and search for some more.
If needed, I log into my favorite grocery coupon websites (including this site!) and download a few more grocery coupons, or order a few more Sunday paper coupons from a coupon clipping service (eBay is also a good option).
I wait for a double-coupon day/week (not a must, but it improves the savings).
Before going to the store I leaf through my wad of coupons to remind myself what I have (most of them have been clipped 3-4 weeks ago).
Entering the store I pick up its magazine and look for some more interesting store coupons and sales. I also look for sales thru out the store and try to match them with my coupons.

Magically, most of the 3-4 week old coupons sync up very well with stuff that’s already on sale on the shelves.
Sale price combined with coupons gets me products for less than half the usual price. And on double-coupon days/week I practically get many groceries for free.
While at the store I pick up more coupons (blinkies, tearpads etc.) and see if they mach my shopping list. If they do – great. If not – they’ll wait in my coupon organizer for next week’s shopping trip.
Smart Coupon Strategy is the core of effective couponing. Double Coupons and Coupon Stacking are nice to have, and while they do improve the savings they are certainly not a must.
The art of Coupon Stacking – How to stack coupons effectively and get grocery items almost for free!
Coupon clippers are always looking for additional ways to save money, and stacking coupons is another way to save big.

What is Coupon Stacking?
As the term suggests, stacking coupons refers to using a Manufacturer Coupon and a Store Coupon on the same item.

For example, if you have a manufacturer coupon that reads “$1.50 off” and a store coupon that reads “$0.50 off” – than the store will give you $1.50 off.

Stacking coupons allows you to increase your savings and reduce your grocery bills considerably.

There seems to be some confusion, even among the cashiers, between coupon stacking and double coupons. The difference between the two is that while you need only one manufacturer coupon to double coupons, you must have a store coupon on top of the manufacturer coupon for stacking coupons.

O.k., so I’ve got another 50 cents off. Big deal…
Savvy shoppers that combine our Smart Coupon Strategy with coupon stacking can get items almost for free.
For example, when a shampoo bottle that’s normally priced at $3.50 goes on sale for $2.00, you can use a $0.50 manufacturer coupon, stack a $1.00 store coupon on top of it and end up paying 50 cents for that $3.50 shampoo bottle.

Why do grocery stores stack coupons?
Grocery stores allow customers to stack coupons as an incentive to drive traffic into the store. When the store decides to allow coupon stacking, it’s the same as if the store is discounting the item by the face value of the store’s coupon.
The manufacturer will reimburse the grocery store for the face value of the manufacturer coupon, while the store ends up paying for the face value of their store coupon.

Are there any limitations to coupon stacking?
Many grocery stores and drugstores allow this practice with no limitations, while others may have a “one coupon per UPC code” rule. Perhaps the best way to tell what the store policy on stacking coupons is to ask.

What about eCoupons?
These coupons are not common yet, but participating stores will let you stack eCoupons on top of the already stacked store & manufacturer coupons – tripling you savings!

Any more coupon stacking tips I should know about?

Bring along the competitor’s promotional ad if it allows stacking coupons. While some stores may not stack coupons, you may find that they will match the near by competitor’s advertised prices. Take advantage of it if your store does price match. Always carry the advertisements with you as proof of what items and prices you expect them to match.
Some stores may also accept the near by competitor’s coupons just to keep your business with them. It’s well worth asking if they do.
Be organized at the checkout lane. Put all like items together and have the coupons for them ready. Immediately after the cashier rings these item up, hand him/her both the manufacturer’s and the store’s coupons. That way you can detect immediately if a coupon that should have been stacked rang up correctly. In the event that it didn’t – have the cashier apply the discount manually.
Most importantly – always compare prices. Have your Price List ready at hand and compare prices. Buying at a store with everyday low prices can be cheaper than buying at a store with high prices, even if it will stack a $0.50 off coupon.
What about Taxes?
You should be aware that depending on jurisdiction, even if your item is free after coupons, some registers will still ring up the total tax due.
Coupon Clipping Services are en excellent option for those that don’t have the time, nor the energy for clipping coupons. Following are reviews on the top services.
For a small fee, usually 10% of the coupons face value you can have someone else clip your coupons for you.

These services offer benefits for those that:

Need extra coupons from the paper coupon inserts, but don’t want to buy multiple copies of them.
Need specific coupons that aren’t distributed in their area.
Lack the time or the energy to go over all those inserts.

Using coupon clipping services is very straight forward: while assembling your grocery list for next week, you log into one of these sites and search for relevant coupons according to product type or brand. A few days later an envelop arrives with all of the coupons you ordered. This is it!

Which is better – eBay or these services?
Coupon broker services have three major benefits over eBay:

You have a much larger selection of grocery coupons, and the search for a certain coupon is certainly easier.
You can buy a single coupon or just a few, unlike eBay where they come in multitudes of 10, 15 or 20.
You deal with a known and trusted site, and don’t run the risk of buying a photocopied coupon.
If you only need a few coupons, the cost of these services may work out to be cheaper than it would cost you to buy a Sunday newspaper for the inserts.
It is basically more “Legit” to purchase grocery coupons through these services than on eBay
Purchasing coupons through eBay has the following benefits:

You can get certain coupon in large quantities, unlike clipping services which tend to put a limit on the maximum number of individual coupons.
You can fine all kinds of coupons (e.g. blinkies) that aren’t offered by these clipping services.

Is it legal to trade coupons?
One question I’m frequently being asked is whether purchasing coupons from an online coupon clipping service is legit.

Purchasing coupons is actually illegal, and most coupons will clearly state that buying or selling them voids the value of the coupon. However, coupon clipping services get around this law by stating that the coupons are free and you are paying for their time to clip, sort and mail the coupons.

There is no type of legislation that I know of that says this kind of service is illegal, and anyway, there is no telling if a coupon was clipped at home or bought through an online service. But if you are concerned with what is technically right, there is the answer.

Bottom line is that weather the companies that print and distribute the coupons like it or not, there is nothing they can do about it, and the proof for that is that these services are advertised openly all over the internet.

And what about eBay?
eBay rules state clearly that the coupons themselves are the items being sold, and coupon sellers aren’t allowed to sell the “service” of clipping, sorting and handling.

eBay also posts a warning to buyers, stating that retailers may refuse to accept coupons that have been obtained, “in a way that violates the terms of the coupon.”

Similar to coupons bought at a coupon clipping service, there is no telling if a coupon was clipped at home or bought through an eBay auction. I’ve never heard of a retailer refusing these coupons, but if you’re concerned with what is technically right, there is the answer.

Things that you should know

Coupon clipping services require you to register with them.
They charge an administration fee (usually around $.50) for their services.

Regular shipping fees apply. Shipping usually takes anywhere from 3 to 10 days, but may be expedited.

Grocery Coupon Websites Reviews
Following is a list of the leading Grocery Coupon Websites, all of which were contributed by our readers. These online couponing websites include mostly food coupons to print, but some of them have online printable coupons for a wide selection of clothing, electronics, restaurants, furniture and much more as well.

Grocery Coupon WebsitesMany online printable coupons sites require you to download and install their printing software. This software is used by these coupon sites to enforce a limitation of maximum two prints per coupon.

Some readers have reported that the download may not work with a certain browser. In that case selecting a different one (Firefox works fine for most) should solve the problem.

Most sites update the coupons on a weekly or monthly basis, so there is no point checking up every day for new coupons. You should check once a week or once every two weeks, a day or two before your planed trip to the supermarket.

Keep in mind is that many of the sites will feature the same coupons, so there is no need to subscribe to all of them. Try out a few, and keep the one or two you like the most.

Another thing to bear in mind is that beside these online couponing sites, the best two sources for grocery coupons remain the Sunday paper coupons inserts and your local store’s magazine. Use the online printable coupons to augment your needs.

Clipping coupons will only get you this far, but if you really want to save money on groceries and get many items almost for free, you need to understand how to combine the coupons with sales items. Make sure you read our “How to Coupon – Smart Coupon Strategy” article to get yourself acquainted with Smart Coupon Strategy.

Remember – it’s all about preparation. Don’t just go shopping with a bunch of coupons. This is a sure receipt for a failure. A day or two before you plan on shopping sit down with your coupon organizer, check your pantry, log into your favorite grocery coupon websites to augment your stock of coupons, and compile a shopping list.

This article assumes that you’ve already familiarized yourself with our Smart Coupon Strategy. May we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the following topics first, and only then come back to fine tune your couponing skills:

How to Accumulate Grocery Coupons
Double Coupons

I hate clipping coupons. What other options do I have?
Let your kids do it for you as one of their chores. (Thanks Phillipa)
Use coupon clipping services.
Buy multitude of them for a small fee at eBay.
Sales Taxes - Couponing TipsWhat about Taxes?
You should be aware that depending on jurisdiction, even if your item is free after coupons, some registers will still ring up the total tax due.

This is often determined by the type of the coupon:

With grocery store coupons, the product was never offered at the original price and the coupon represents a reduction in the amount paid and the sales-tax as well.
With manufacturer coupons, the original price is still paid but some of the price is covered by the manufacturer instead of the consumer, so the full price remains taxable.

What if I have a coupon for a certain brand, but I prefer another?
It’s not widely known, but manufacturer coupons can be used on a variety of products by same manufacturer. Although it isn’t broadcasted to the consumer that this can be done – it always works.

You’re not limited to use the coupon on the exact brand. You only need to use it on a similar product from the same category of products that manufacturer carries.

For example, if Kellogg’s puts out coupons for Kellogg’s Special k, you can actually use the coupon to buy any other type of cereals by Kellogg’s, even if the coupon doesn’t say it.

Printable Food CouponsI’m trying to download grocery coupons to print, but they want me to install their printing software. Is it safe?
Many online printable coupons sites require you to download and install their printing software. This software is used by the coupon sites to enforce a limitation of maximum two prints per coupon.
If the download doesn’t work with your browser, try using a different one (Firefox works fine for most people).

I need more than two coupons. How can I print more coupons?
If you have more than one computer than you can print more coupons (you may use a different email or user name to log into the site).

Another option is to use a family/friends/neighbors computer to print more coupons.

Photo copying the coupons is not allowed, and may or may not work. Some websites have started putting security codes on their online printable coupons, and you may need to do some explaining should the cashier decide to check the coupons.

My store has a “one coupon per UPC code” rule? Does this mean that I can’t stack coupons?
If your store won’t allow coupon stacking, you can use two coupons for any “two for” offer (Buy one get one free, two for $5 and so on).

Couponing TipsWhat other couponing tips or combinations that can I use?
Combine a buy-one-get-one (BOGO) free coupon with a buy-one-get-one free sale, and you could get both items for free.

I prefer my store, but I have coupons for the competitor’s store. Where should I buy?
Many stores accept competitor’s coupons. If your store accepts the competitor’s coupons, you may use it to stack a manufacturer’s coupon with the competing store’s coupon.

And what if it doesn’t accept the competing store’s coupons?
You can ask them to mach prices with the competing store (which is practically the same as accepting their coupons).

Always carry the competing store’s advertisements with you as proof of what items and prices you expect your store to match.

You can augment your clipped coupons with online printable coupons. Many sites offer grocery coupons to print, along with coupons for other categories such as apparel, utilities, households etc. All of then let you select the coupons that you need and print them on your printer. Our site offers a wide selection of printable coupons, and as a service to you we also provide a list of the Leading Grocery Coupon Websites, all of which were contributed by our readers.

How can I keep track of all these coupon offers that companies spur on their websites? (Thanks Betty)
Twitter Couponing TipsCompanies sometimes offer spur of the moment coupons and deals on their websites. The easiest way to keep track of these is to use your Twitter account (open one if you don’t already have one) and start following people who search out these deals and post the links to them.

That way you don’t have to check for yourself all these sites. Instead – just go to your Twitter account. But keep in mind that these coupons and freebie deals often go very fast so you have to check your account often.

Here are a few example links:

What do all these abbreviations and acronyms on the coupons mean?
Understanding the jargon is important. The following list contains all known coupon abbreviations and acronyms, as well as jargon and lingo most widely used by couponers in various blogs and forums.

For couponers, the words “food stockpile” means never having to pay full price on grocery items. Here are some realistic food stockpiling tips.
When you stockpile food, you can purchase multiple groceries items at a very low price, stock your pantry and waits for the next sale cycle. By stockpiling food when prices are low you get everyday low prices. Stocking a pantry is a key part of sassing money on groceries.

What is a food stockpile?
A stockpile is simply buying more than what you need for immediate use when prices are extremely low, so that you do not have to pay full price in the future.

Manufacturers and retailers run sales in cycles. Everything typically goes on sale about every 8 – 12 weeks. If you buy 8 – 12 weeks worth of grocery items that you use when they go on sale, then you will have enough to last you until the next time they go on sale. That means that even when items aren’t on sale, you are using the ones from your pantry (that were bought on sale) so you get an everyday low prices year round.

How many items should I buy?
That depends entirely on how many items you use. Each family has a different food stockpile. For example, if your family uses 2 boxes of certain pasta each week, than you will need to by 16 – 24 boxes of that pasta. If you family uses a pack of paper towels over 5 weeks, than 2 – 3 packs will do. Remember – depending on how much you use each different grocery item, stock up 8 – 12 weeks worth of every different item.

How do I start to stockpile food?
To begin a food stockpile, all you need is proper space, coupons and sales. For the first few months or so you will be spending a little bit more money to buy your normal groceries and begin your stockpile. However, once you’ve stocked up your pantry you will be able to forgo buying items until they are on sale and have coupons available making the items very cheap and oftentimes free.
You will need a large amount of coupons for the stocking up period. Consider buying multiple copies of the Sunday newspaper, trading coupons or using coupon clipping services.

How do I know when to re-stock?
The whole point of stockpiling food is that you should only buy items when they go on sale and you have coupons for them. Usually, as explained in my Smart Coupon Strategy article, items go on sale 3 – 4 weeks after the manufacturers release Sunday paper coupons. What you want to do is collect these coupons, hold on to them until the sales start and then use the coupons on the already reduced items. This is the time to replenish your food stockpile with 8-12 weeks worth of groceries.

And if I run out on a certain item?
Occasionally you will run out on one product or another because you didn’t buy enough of it on your last shopping trip, or you’ve miss calculated, or you’ve start using more of it, or because the manufacturer broke the sales cycle period.

In such case be patient, don’t buy more then a week’s supply, and keep your wad of coupons until that product eventually goes on sale.

Any more tips for stocking a pantry?
Pay attention to the following tips if you don’t want to end up throwing food and grocery items:

Keep your pantry fresh
Put new items that you’ve just purchased at the back, while keeping older items at the front. This way you won’t find yourself with a bunch of expired grocery.
Pay attention to expiration dates
Keep an eye on expiration dates when you stockpile food. Almost every product has an expiration date, even toothpaste. Most items have more than a year before they expire, so you should have no problem of you only stockpiles items to last 8 – 12 weeks.
Only stockpile products that you know your family will actually use
It’s very tempting to buy lots of products that you have coupons for, even if you don’t use them on a regular basis. Simply Don’t.Remember – you didn’t save money if you’ll never use these 10 cereal boxes that where on sale.

How large should my pantry be?
If you’ve been watching “Extreme Couponing” on TLC than you probably got a wrong impression on how big a pantry should be.

For most families the regular kitchen storage place should be enough. You may need a few more extra shelves. If you have set up your whole garage with shelves – that an indication that your stockpile is probably too large and not realistic.

Organization and free space management are two skills that you’ll want to develop over time. A deep freezer may prove very handy to store 10 weeks worth of frozen veggies and meat, and will pay itself in less than a year.
The new show “Extreme Coupons” on TLC has shocked everyone with the incredible potential of coupon savings, but it exposed some dark sides of couponing too.
Unfortunately, the show has also given people unrealistic expectations about couponing.

Every day I get a few emails, all asking the same question: “Why am I getting only 50% savings, not even close to the 90% they do on the show?”

People forget that this is a TV show and not real life. Most of the stores you see on the show have waived their limitations for these people. Don’t expect to coupon limitlessly as they do.

Another thing to remember is that stocking up a pantry take a few months, not one trip.
Extreme couponing takes time – more than 60 hours a week! To be honest, I don’t think it’s worth the effort.

Realistic couponing on the other hand can get you 50% savings, with as little as 1-2 hours a week. With that in mind – let’s set up realistic expectations…

Realistic Time
Realistically I spend 1-2 hour a week on planning my shopping trips, checking my pantry, clipping coupons and augmenting them with printable ones.

If you’re a beginner it may take longer than this to develop your system, but after few months it should go pretty smooth.

Realistic Stockpiling
Okay, 40 years worth of toilet paper? More shampoo then I will ever use? This is just not my view of stockpiling.

As I explain in my Smart Coupon Strategy article, sales come in cycles. Realistic Stockpiling should be relatively small, so that items would last until the next sale.

How much exactly is that? That depends on how much your family uses a certain item and how often it goes on sale. Start with a small amount from each item, and increase your stockpile if you run out of it before the next sale.

For most families the regular kitchen storage place should be enough. You may need 2-3 extra shelves. If you have set up your whole garage with shelves – that an indication that your stockpile is probably too large and not realistic.

Realistic Couponing
Having that said, if you want to learn to coupon and save 50% or more on your grocery bill, then I can certainly help. Couponing is a great way to save your family money, and it doesn’t have to be an obsessive hobby!

The image serves as guidance only. You need to read the “required purchase” text on the coupon for the details on what you can use this coupon for. Often, a coupon will be printed for multiple items and have only one item pictured.

Expiration date
You can use a coupon up to and including the expiration date. However you organize your coupons, regularly go through and pull out expired coupons.
You can donate your expired coupons to our armed forces stationed overseas via the Overseas Coupon Program. Military bases honor coupons up to 6 months past their expiration date.

Some coupons may say “No Expiration Date” and those are legitimate coupons, but you should be wary of these (especially when purchased) because some people have created fraudulent coupons without this information.

Grocery Store CouponCoupon type
There are two main types of coupons – Manufacturer coupons and Store coupons. Knowing the type of coupon is essential in maximizing savings.
Some stores double manufacturer coupons, while most stores let you stack a store coupon on top of a manufacturer coupon.
A retailer coupon will also show the name of the store at which the coupon can be used.

Coupon value
Determines how much the coupon is worth. You should read the fine print for “free product” coupons, since they’ll often state a maximum value. Sometimes the maximum value is less than the item cost, which means that the item won’t be free.

Required purchase
Details of what you need to purchase in order to use the coupon. In any case of mismatch between the product image and the wording – the wording overrides the image.

Often, a coupon will be printed for multiple items and have only one item pictured.
Some coupons may state “save $1 off of 2 products” or something similar. This means that:

You need to purchase two items to use the coupon
The coupon will attach to both products, and you won’t be able two use two coupons for two products.

Grocery Coupons Fine printFine print
This section contains additional info for you and/or the retailer on use of this coupon.
If the coupon beeps at the register, your cashier may attempt to read this and explain why you can’t use the coupon. You should read the fine print in advance, so that you can plane how and on what products you can use the coupon.

Here are few examples of limitation imposed in the fine print:

One Coupon Per Purchase – This means that you can use only one coupon per item you are purchasing. If you are buying a second item, you’ll need a second coupon in order to get the same savings.

One Coupon Per Transaction – This means that you are only allowed one coupon for this item in a single transaction. If you want to purchase a second item and use a coupon on it, you’ll need to do a separate transaction.

As cashiers often confuse purchase with transaction – you may need to explain them the difference.

Grocery Coupons BarcodeBarcodes
The barcode scanner reads the barcode to know what the coupon is for and how much it is worth. Under the barcode lines there are also numbers that identify the product and value.

There are two important uses for these numbers:

A – This is the beginning of the barcode of the coupon. On a manufacturer coupon – it determines whether it will double or not.

A manufacturer coupon with a bar code starting with #9 will never double.
A manufacturer coupon with a bar code starting with #5 will automatically double, even if the coupon states “DO NOT DOUBLE”.
B – This number is called UPC (Universal Product Code), and it identifies the item or items that the coupon is for.

If you’re not sure whether the coupon covers a certain item – find the UPC on your physical item and look for those numbers. If some part of it matches up with the five numbers on the coupon – the coupon will go thru.

Checking barcodes against coupon codes isn’t necessary, but it can be handy knowledge to have.
